When we were starting to explore the idea of Text To Game AI, one of the things that was recommended to us was build a community. Some of the suggestions were:
1. Make a Whatsapp group
2. Make a discord group
3. Let creators engage with each other
Late December of 2023, we started doing that and by January, we saw that it wasn't really working. Building communities without having solid grasp of who are going to be our biggest cheerleaders was difficult. One team member was essentially constantly trying to spark conversations and failing miserably
There were only 2 possible explanations:
1. The people were simply not interested in what we were doing
2. The content we were giving them was not exciting enough
We started chatting with some of them one on one. During the one on one calls and chats, it was clear that what we were doing was exciting for most people so the problem was what we were giving to them in content.
We don't have a content team. And for the most part, we're not even trying to make one. We want to make the product, make the community and not necessarily make a lot of content. We thought what were the explanations for our content to be uninteresting to them? The possible explanations:
1. They don't understand what we're making
2. They don't understand how the content relates to what we're making
3. They don't see its use for them
4. They don't see their role in any of it
Here the answer was not 1 out of 4. It was all of the above. We, as founders, understand that "what we're making" doesn't have to be clear instantly to us and it will get clear over time. But for the users, it's either what they want or what they don't want. And how much they care about anything really depends on how much they want it.
Our solution... pause on the community bit for a second. Build a little more. Get more clarity. And in the meantime, build more personal connections with a few creators by doing call and chats and mail exchanges with them. We now have a few creators who're really excited about our product. Who have restarted our discord community and with the clarity that we have acquired they are able to excite more people to become a semi-active part of the community.
We will become more active on the groups as a company and as a team over time but we will definitely be building deeper connections with our first cheerleaders who are helping shape our product in the first place. So, till the time we're ready with something that can stay with all of you, we'll be chatting with some of you. This community of people who are not on any groups but in our personal chats is our Dispersed Creators' community.
